Overview
The below information provides an overview of our Family Leave (Parental Leave) policy. This is a policy that will adapt and change over time as the company scales and we look to better serve the needs of our team.
Paid Time Off
- Primary Caregiver - 12 weeks paid time off
- Primary Caregiver Definition: A primary caregiver is defined as someone who has primary responsibility for the care of a child who has been added to the family through birth or adoption. It is available to employees of any gender.
- Secondary Caregiver - 4 weeks paid time off (2 weeks when the child is born and 2 other weeks that can be taken at the caregiver's discretion before the child turns two)
- Secondary Caregiver Definition: The secondary caregiver is defined as not the primary caregiver (the caregiver that does not have primary responsibilities).
Pregnancy Loss
- Stillbirth: In the very unfortunate event of a stillbirth, defined by the CDC as after 20 weeks of pregnancy, the employee will receive the same family leave benefits stated for the primary and secondary caregiver in the overview above.
- Miscarriage: In the also very unfortunate event of a miscarriage, anytime in the second trimester of pregnancy (weeks 12-20), the employee (whether they are the primary or secondary caregiver) is entitled to receive up to 2 weeks paid time off.
Other Benefits
- Adoption: Adopting parents have the same benefits granted to the secondary caregivers in the overview above.
- Vacation policy: We understand that you may want to keep certain things with pregnancy private, thus, we want to remind you about our unlimited vacation policy. Please take advantage of this when it comes to taking time off for things like: doctor's appointments, fertility treatment, etc.
Other Notes
- Expectations for Family Leave: Before going on one of these leaves, it is important to have a conversation first with your manager. The expectation is that during the paid time off, you will have all of that time to yourself (no work); however, some employees do have a desire to stay involved and on top of what has been going on with the company.
- If you fall into that latter category, you can work with a manger to create several touch-points or "Keep In Touch Days" to keep you in the loop.
Stipulation
The employee must be with the company for at least 12 weeks (3 months) to receive these family leave benefits. This is consistent with the training/probation period ending as well as our time qualification to receive the 401k matching benefit (see here).
